Spider control in Modesto
Most spiders in a Modesto yard eat other bugs and cannot hurt you. Black widows in the woodpile and garage are the ones people want gone.

How to recognize the problem
The adult female black widow is shiny black with a red or orange hourglass under a large round abdomen. Young ones and males look quite different, with white stripes on a tan body. They build messy webs in dark, dry, undisturbed places. Most bites happen when someone reaches into one of those places.
If someone tells you a brown recluse is in your house, ask to see it identified. UC IPM says the brown recluse does not occur in California. An odd one arrives now and then with household goods, firewood or vehicles, but there are no breeding populations in the state.
Where spiders settle around Modesto
UC IPM says black widows live in most parts of California, usually outdoors, in woodpiles and garage clutter. Sheds and stacked pots are the local version of that. Wear gloves when you move things that have sat a long time.
Outdoor lights near doors draw insects, and insects draw spiders. A lot of the web-building around eaves follows the lights.
What a spider visit usually involves
Every independent company works differently. This is the general shape, so you know what to ask about.
Finding out what you have
The company should identify the spiders first. UC IPM says control should focus on removing webs and hiding places, and that pesticides are generally not needed for most spiders.
Clearing webs and hiding spots
Expect web removal around eaves and advice on clearing clutter along the foundation.
Treating if needed
If the company recommends treatment, ask what the product is, where it goes, how to prepare and how long to stay out.
Dealing with what spiders eat
If there are a lot of spiders, there may be a lot of insects. Ask about that too.
When to call
- You keep finding black widows near doors, play areas or where you work.
- Webs come back soon after you clear them.
- You cannot reach the eaves or storage areas safely.
Common questions
What should I do if a black widow bites someone?
UC IPM says to stay calm and promptly seek medical advice. California Poison Control is at 1-800-222-1222, and call 911 for life-threatening symptoms such as trouble breathing.
Are there brown recluses in Modesto?
UC IPM says the brown recluse does not live in California apart from rare ones carried in. It also says six eyes is a better clue than a violin-shaped mark, since most spiders have eight.
