Roach control in Modesto
Small tan roaches in the kitchen and big dark ones by the garage drain are different problems. Knowing which you have helps the conversation with the company.

How to recognize the problem
The German cockroach is about 1/2 inch long and light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. It lives indoors, mainly in kitchens and bathrooms, close to warmth, food and water.
Larger roaches usually come from outside. The American is about 2 inches and reddish brown. The Oriental is about 1 1/4 inches and almost black. The Turkestan female is about an inch long with cream markings. All three favor damp outdoor spots such as water meter boxes and drains, and can wander in at ground level.
Other signs include dark specks or smears, cast skins, and egg cases in cabinets and behind appliances. A flashlight around the water heater and under the sink will tell you a lot.
Why roaches show up in Modesto homes
UC IPM says the Turkestan cockroach is taking the place of the Oriental in warm, dry parts of California, and that field cockroaches may move indoors during hot or dry weather. Long Valley summers suit that pattern, and irrigated yards keep meter boxes and planters damp when everything else has dried out.
German roaches are a different story. They breed indoors, and UC IPM says to check what comes into a building, especially appliances, furniture, boxes and things from storage. Once inside, they stay close to food and water.
What a roach visit usually involves
Every independent company works differently. This is the general shape, so you know what to ask about.
Finding where they live
Expect a flashlight inspection of the kitchen, bathrooms and appliances, and perhaps sticky monitors along the walls to see where the activity is.
Treating the hiding places
UC IPM generally rates baits above sprays, and says foggers tend to miss hiding spots and scatter roaches. Ask what the company plans to use and where.
Cleaning and sealing
UC IPM is plain about this: pesticides alone will not solve a roach problem. Expect to be asked to fix leaks, seal gaps and clear cardboard.
A return check
Roach problems often need a second look. Ask whether a follow-up visit is part of what you are agreeing to, and how to prepare.
When to call
- You see small tan roaches indoors, especially around the kitchen or bathroom.
- You find egg cases or droppings inside cabinets.
- Someone at home has asthma that seems worse. UC IPM links roach allergens to childhood asthma, so mention it to your doctor as well.
- You have cleaned up and sealed gaps, and they are still coming.
Common questions
I keep the house clean. Why do I have roaches?
Roaches can come in with appliances, furniture and boxes, and outdoor kinds wander in from meter boxes and drains. A clean kitchen helps a lot but does not make a house immune.
What should I tell the company?
Give the size, the color and where you saw it. Small and tan in the kitchen points to a different roach than large and dark by a drain.
