Ant control in Modesto
A line of small brown ants across the counter in August is about as Modesto as it gets. Here is why they come in, and when it makes sense to call.
Calls are answered early morning to late evening

How to recognize the problem
The ant you are most likely to see is the Argentine ant. It is about 1/8 inch long and dull brown, and it travels in steady trails toward sweet food or water. UC IPM calls it the most common ant in and around California homes.
Colonies join up into huge groups with many queens. That is why killing the ants you can see, or finding one nest, rarely ends it.
Ants and the dry season
UC IPM says ants often come inside to escape dry, hot weather or flooding, and that an invasion can start suddenly when food outside runs out or the weather turns. A Valley summer is long and dry, and a kitchen has what they want.
Water matters as much as food. Leaky faucets and sprinkler heads draw them, and fruit dropped from backyard trees feeds them. UC IPM suggests keeping plants, grass and mulch about a foot back from the foundation.
What an ant visit usually involves
Every independent company works differently. This is the general shape, so you know what to ask about.
Following the trails
The company looks for where the trails start outside and where they get in. Do not wipe out the trail before the visit if you can stand it. It shows the route.
Baits outside the house
UC IPM favors baits on the outdoor trails over indoor sprays, which it says give only temporary control, and warns that outdoor pyrethroid sprays can pollute waterways. Ask what the company uses and why.
Sealing and cleaning
Expect advice on caulking gaps around pipes and wires, and on keeping food sealed.
Before and after
Ask how to prepare, whether anything should be kept off the floor, and how long to stay out of treated areas.
When to call
- Trails keep coming back after you have cleaned up and sealed gaps.
- Ants are in several rooms at once.
- You see winged insects and cannot tell ants from termites. The termite page shows the difference.
Common questions
Why do the ants come back after I spray?
Spray kills the ants it touches, but the colony is far bigger than what you can see and has many queens. UC IPM says sprays indoors give only temporary control.
Do ants mean my house is dirty?
No. Dry weather can push them in even when the kitchen is spotless. A drip under the sink can be enough.

Seeing it now? Make the call.
You will be connected with an independent pest control company that works in your area. Say what you have seen and where, then ask about the visit. Nothing is decided until you agree to it with the company.
